Languages Overview

Over the Ages of Agyris, literally thousands of languages have flourished and then been lost with the collapse of Gods, empires, and races. Their traces might be found etched on the side of an obelisk, tattooed on zombie flesh or even written on copprine tablets, offering the historians of Agyris a wealth of knowledge to rediscover. Even today, with the overwhelming success of Toth Trade Tongue, there are massive barriers to effective communication, including distance, cultures, and the sheer number of languages that still flourish. Two neighboring villages may speak entirely differing languages even though only the ruins of a wall separates them.

Those with a talent for language can have a great deal of success, best demonstrated by the Toth Trade Merchants and the Harlikain of Aethos. Both specialize in learning as much about various cultures as possible, and encourage their peoples to learn through established educational academies.

This chart shows the relationships of the world's languages through the Ages.

Notice that every language has a history of prior versions... most of these are dead languages, found only in ancient tablets, scrolls, and sometimes books. These should provide Gyrmasters with plenty of obscure languages to add interest to the world.
