Fey - The Lifeblood of Agyris |
|
The world of Agyris is held together by an unseen
magical force called "Fey." A small bit of Fey can be found
in most things, including stones, trees, folk, wind, words, faeries, poems,
and even song. (But not lead) Even your breath contains traces of it.
This is not to say that these things are laced with power, for they are
not. It simply means that traces of Fey is thought to be contained within
everything, unless it has been leeched out. Some things not only hold
Fey within, they create it, causing rivers of magic to flow out of them
like fountains.
The Symphony
The ancient Asidri funneled, contained, and redirected
these random flowings, bringing structure to the Fey, and making "the
Fey lines". Each Fey line has its own distinct signature; certain
types of magic work better on or about certain lines. Collectively, this
network of lines is known as the "Symphony."
The Symphony allows wizards to shape spells,
enchantments, and bindings. Some Wizards are able to listen to the "music"
of the Fey flowing down the lines, and can hear its voice. By the Fourth
Age, most schools of magic have been lost, leaving only four that have
been preserved for modern practitioners: Ato, the lost magic of the Atosians;
Celetrin, ancient musical activated earth Fey; Phann, the wild magic;
Waik, the knellmaker, and Kiero, the Fey of the Gods.
The Feyborn
Certain individuals of each of the Mortalkin
races are "feyborn", meaning that they are born with the talent
and potential to practice magic. The only exception to this is the magic
called Phann, which doesn't always hold to this law. There have been may
individuals who practice Phann, but are not "feyborn"; this
is just the chaotic nature of Phann.
Depending upon the race, the percentile of feyborn individuals vary.
In the Wythir and Maejir, almost half of the population is feyborn, where
in humanity this number is closer to 20 percent. Dar and Faeyan are usually
feyborn, if the parents perform certain rites, otherwise usually about
35 percent are. Durga are only feyborn in unusual cases, about 5 percent
of the time, while Ogra and Drann are feyborn about 15 percent.
In all cases, feyborn are recognizable due to one enlarged pupil, which
can be seen at physical maturity, around 17-20 years old. This is the
"spirit eye", which allows them to see the Symphony and notice
the Unseen Ways. It typically is a bit shimmery and sometimes flects of
light can be seen inside. (This is Fey reflecting in their eyes.)
